What do you do if you simply don’t have enough room for your mobility-challenged mom or dad to move into your first floor? That was the situation with this home – the first floor was simply too small and wouldn’t work for a mobility challenged parent. Yet the second floor had plenty of room. Living Free Home offered a simple solution – a curved stairlift made it possible for mom to get access to the second floor and a barrier-free bath solution made the second floor completely livable.

This family could have increased the footprint of their home to build on another bedroom suite, but that would have cost a lot of money and it would have increased their yearly taxes.

Curved Stairlift. Standards that never bend

Our client needed a custom rail designed to fit this beautiful radius turn staircase. The stair lift helps her mom get upstairs to her suite where we also provided a barrier free bathroom.

Aesthetic and inventive solutions

Stairlifts need not compromise the beauty of your home. In this case, our solution was to have the stair lift make a turn at the bottom so the unit can be stored in the study, out of the way when not in use. These custom rail stair lifts can be fabricated to fit just about any stair case design; pie steps, 90 degree turns, radius turns, and intermediate landings. The stairlift installation and bathroom modification allowed our clients mother to stay in the home.

A barrier free shower unit. Granting access to the entire home.

In the bathroom we removed the existing tub which was impossible for the user to get in and out of without danger of falling and replaced it with a barrier free shower unit. There are no curbs or steps now and if in the future the user needs to be transported in a rolling shower chair there are no barriers. We also installed a wall mounted seat and safety grab bars all around. Mom can shower and her daughter knows she is safe from falling.

Straight stairlift with a curveball

At Living Free Home, we install stairlifts in some challenging situations. It seems that architects don’t usually consider the mobility issues that homeowners will face in older age. In this case, a straight stairlift would have been the perfect answer, until you take into account the landing halfway up. While it’s a beautiful feature, most stairlift companies would have scratched their heads and either walked away from this one or would have tried to talk the customer into installing two shorter stairlifts. Of course, this would have required transferring to the second lift every time you go up or down.

An inventive straight stairlift solution

We fabricated this stair lift rail to match the intermediate landing on this double staircase. In some cases you can install stock straight rail stairlifts on this type of staircase. This client’s unique situation dictated that they not transfer at the landing. They wanted one rail that would continue over the landing and up the second set of stairs.

We were able to accommodate the needs of this client and build them a stairlift that enabled her to regain access to her second floor.
